Detail of Non Nobis Domine: ochre and blue-grey cracks

    Roberto Recchimurzo

    Interview

    What is art to you?

For me, art is a language that begins where words break apart. It is listening; it is silence taking shape. It is the place where matter becomes memory and time reveals itself. A threshold between the visible and the invisible, where being lets itself be traversed…

Detail of a painting: a textured horizon in rust and white

    Marta Lock

The Polish artist’s creative universe recalls the rarefied atmospheres of the far north — almost fairy-tale places, heightened by a cold air that seems to freeze on the outside yet caresses and warms within. Her paintings are hushed emotional moments of great intensity: without raising their voice, they suggest an undefined place that could be anywhere, yet, through the emotion it stirs, is there in that very moment — the instant of eternity in which the artist lays her brush on the canvas. It is the detail of colour that shapes the sensations drawn from observing reality: blues and greens for serenity, fuchsias and violets for the deepest introspection and reflection, red and yellow for confusion and the urge to restore order, white for the wish to overcome fear and the unknown. For Szuba, what matters is not to describe an image rationally, or to confine it within the canons of what the human eye already knows: she transforms it into poetic song, into pure energy that flows out of the work and draws the viewer in, as if to take them by the hand and lead them into that fantastical atmosphere which stands for the emotional world — the most hidden and the most compelling, because it speaks directly to the soul.

Detail of Lux Graalis Occulti: dark cracks on an ivory ground with gold leaf

    Antonio Castellana

Her painting, rooted in the Informel tradition, is marked by an intriguing fusion of the real and the surreal, and by a classical composure projected into modernity. Gabriela Aleksandra Szuba depicts splendid landscapes through harmonious dissections, and gestures that are a triumph of aesthetics and of human sensitivity — images that surprise, however, with the improbability of their colours and the refined taste of their original depths…
